At the 2006 local government elections Stephan Weil (SPD) took 52.3% of votes at the first ballot to become the new Lord Mayor of Hannover, after nine years as the City Treasurer with responsibility for its finance, legal affairs, civic order and fire brigade.
Although born in Hamburg he regards himself as a “lifelong Hanoverian” and says, “When the fans in the stadium sing ‘Hannover’s the loveliest town in the world,’ then I’m singing along with them.” Stephan Weil is married with a son.
As ‘Oberbürgermeister’ (literally, ‘senior mayor’) he is both the formal representative and the chief executive of the City of Hannover. Among his priorities he lists education as a key theme for the future and promoting the integration and coexistence of Hannover’s citizens, along with policies for strengthening the role of the city districts.
