The Agenda 21 was passed in 1992 in Rio de Janeiro; its aims are to secure long term the essential conditions for life, to stabilise the world economy and to establish social justice between generations, genders and peoples as the guiding vision of sustainability.
In this spirit, on 8th June 1995 Hannover City Council resolved to set up a Local Agenda 21 through consultation with citizens, local organisations and the business sector, crossing organisational boundaries to seek solutions to the problems of the 21st century. Agenda 21 comprises detailed calls for action to secure sustainable ecological, economic and social development through this century and reaching into every political sphere.
Many steps on the way towards sustainability have already been taken.
