State Capital Hannover
The Lord Mayor
The Lord Mayor is the highest representative of the State Capital of Hannover and simultaneously the Head of the Administration. Elected directly by the citizens, he holds office for a term of eight years. He officiates full-time as a temporary civil servant. At a run-off election on 6 October 2013 Stefan Schostok (SPD), who two weeks before had narrowly missed gaining the absolute majority, won with 66.3 percent of the votes.
The Lord Mayor’s responsibilities are to direct and supervise the administration of the State Capital and, within the frame of the Council’s guidelines, manage the distribution of transactions. Furthermore he is obligated to inform the Council, the Finance and General Purposes Committee and the City District Councils about significant issues.
The Lord Mayor regularly holds citizens’ consultation hours, for which the dates are coordinated by the Citizens’ Office.
