With 66.3 per cent of the votes, in a run-off election on 6 October 2013 Stefan Schostok was elected Mayor and CEO of the City of Hannover.

Five days later, on 11 October, he officially took office. The social democrat was the third Mayor of Hannover to be elected directly by the citizens.

On May 26, 2019, Mayor Stefan Schostok retired.
