Hildesheim, situated only 25 km south of Hannover, has been the cultural centre of the area between the Harz Mountains and the Lueneburg Heath and between the rivers Weser and Elbe for more than 1,000 years. Of its five Romanesque churches, the Cathedral and St. Michael´s are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Famous works of art from the time of Saxon emperors are highlights in the collection of the Cathedral and the Cathedral museum. Fascinating ancient Egyptian art, Chinese porcelain and ancient Peruvian art are on display in the Roemer- and Pelizaeus-Museum. The market-place is adorned by Germany´s most beautiful half-timbered house, the Butcher´s Guild Hall.
