Peine

Stand Peine
The district town of Peine has about 50,000 inhabitants and lies between the cities of Hannover and Braunschweig. It has a great recreational value: its citizens can pursue leisure activities in the forests or on lakes nearby, they can take part in sporting and cultural events or in a huge diversity of festivities. Annual events like the "Peiner Eulenmarkt" (The Owl - Fair of Peine, a town festival and a trade fair) with its several days of live music on numerous stages are already an established audience magnet. A special highlight on every first weekend in July: the traditional "Peiner Freischieþen" (Peiner Freeshoot), with fireworks, colourful processions and a lot of fairs it is much more than just yet another folklore festival to the citizens of Peine.

An abundant choice of sports clubs and sport facilities cater for every sportsman and sportswoman's taste: from indoor arenas to boat houses and a lake for surfing, from swimming pools and indoor horse riding and tennis facilities to a gliding field and a nearby golf course.

Peine's "Kulturring" (Cultural Association) offers a wide ranging culture programme. Kulturring's own municipal theatre "Peiner Festspiele" and the cultural centre "Forum" are both modern, well equipped theatre venues not only for professional productions, but also for local cultural life, actively promoted by the regional authorities. The range of activities reaches from grand opera performances, ballet, musicals, revue and drama to cabaret and vaudeville performances. Afternoons for senior citizens, theatre performances for children and young people are on the programme as well as folklore, jazz, pop, folk and classical music concerts.

The "Schmedenstedthaus", a listed building from 1685, houses the Municipal Library. It has more than 35,000 books, games, CD-ROMs and other media on offer, which can all be borrowed free of charge. Peine's inner city invites a visitor to a lengthy sightseeing tour. The lovingly restored half-timbered buildings and house fronts are really worth seeing, especially the "Damm" and the "Knippenburg", forming the oldest part of Peine. A great diversity of architectural styles is represented in Peine's pedestrian precinct. Numerous small, specialised shops in the precinct offer goods in numbers and diversity easily comparable to that of large cities.
