The Royal Herrenhausen Gardens comprise Großer Garten, Berggarten, Georgengarten and Welfengarten. Each is a splendid example of a particular garden art.
From the dome of the Hannover City Hall the Great Fountain is clearly visible, an 80-metre column of water pinpointing the location of a fine garden whose history dates back to the year 1666: the Grosser Garten.
Paths and alleys criss cross the gardens in a geometrically precise manner. The many charming attractions include the oldest hedge theatre in Germany dating back to the 17th century and still in use during the summer months. Admirers of Baroque floral displays are recommended to stroll around the Great Parterre with its ornamental box hedges and flowerbeds.
One of the finest examples of baroque architecture is the Galerie with its wonderful ballroom graced with ornate frescoes.
The parterre in front of the Galerie with its many ornamental orange trees and its water fountain adorned with bronze figures brings a touch of mediterranean atmosphere to the scene. For those seeking a challenge and an adventure for children is the maze. This fun should not be missed! Within the Garden one finds small enclosed gardens each embracing a specific theme. Places to enjoy tranquility and the beauty of nature.
After a stroll along the endless hedged paths and lime tree allées, the 'Schloßküche' café-restaurant is waiting to offer the visitor refreshment, set in the old kitchen garden of the palace, the 'Feigengarten', with a view of the Grotto with ornamentation to designs by the artist Niki de Saint Phalle.
