The Museum August Kestner is named after August Kestner (1777–1853) who collected a considerable number of Egyptian and Graeco-Roman craftwork as well as other art objects. His nephew Hermann Kestner inherited the collection with the proviso that it be presented to his native city of Hannover. The bequest was supplemented in 1887 by the collection of the printing company owner, Senator Friedrich Culemann, consisting largely of medieval arts and crafts. Both collections formed the foundation of the Kestner-Museum when it was opened to the public in 1889.
The house was renamed Museum August Kestner on August Kestner’s 230th birthday in November 2007.
