Tosca

The last 24 hours of the singer Tosca's life are the pivot of Puccini's fifth opera, which can be seen in a production by Vasily Barkhatov at the opera house in Hannover.

Vasily Barkhatov takes seriously the fact that Puccini wanted to bring a sex-and-crime story to the stage. For the Russian director, who is in demand at such venues as the Basel Opera, the Deutsche Oper Berlin, the Theater an der Wien and the Frankfurt Opera, the new production is less a political historical drama than the struggle of two alpha men for a strong woman. In a world in which art and power meet glamorously in public, the back rooms are about personal desires.

Set designer Zinovy Margolin creates a visually stunning scenery on several spatial levels for the modern psychological relationship in which all perpetrators are also victims. Kevin John Edusei, Principal Conductor of the Munich Symphony Orchestra and Konzert Theater Bern, will be the musical director. He has conducted at the Hamburg State Opera, the Semperoper Dresden, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam and most recently in Paris and at the Komische Oper Berlin.
