Select Language
Hannover plays an active part in the international network for nuclear disarmament.

Mayors for Peace today represents over 7,000 cities and thus more than one billion people in over 160 countries where implementing the vision of a world free of nuclear weapons is concerned.

The Lower Saxony state capital Hannover has been a member of Mayors for Peace since 1983, the organization then being known as the “Program to Promote Solidarity of Cities Towards the Total Abolition of Nuclear Weapons”. The Japanese city of Hiroshima and Hannover can look back on a longstanding friendship and city partnership, at the heart of which is their joint commitment to ensuring a future free of nuclear weapons. For this reason the Lord Mayor of Hannover is one of eight vice-presidents of Mayors for Peace and coordinates the activities of the approximately 460 German member cities.
