      The summer residence of the Royal House of Hanover was destroyed in the Second World War. Now it has been rebuilt on the original site to the original plans and filled with life for modern times.

      Discover the art of gardening in all its perfection, and headline history at one fascinating location: the new Herrenhausen Palace Museum – an amenity of the state capital Hannover, sponsored by the state of Niedersachsen – is open now, just on time for the summer season 2013: "Palaces and Gardens in Herrenhausen – from Barock to the Modern Day" is the name of the big opening exhibition that invites visitors to entertainingly explore the many facets of the wide-ranging palace and garden world in Herrenhausen.

      Herrenhausen is undoubtedly one of those very special places where exceptional things happen: the universal scholar and polymath Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646 – 1716) developed many of his world-changing ideas here in dialogue with Kurfürstin Sophie (1630 – 1714) and her daughter Sophie Charlotte (1670 – 1701). The spectrum of concepts developed by the European-wide well connected universal scholar ranged from the state of the art of his own day and age, to highly advanced ideas that were well ahead of their time.

      The state capital Hannover and the Volkswagen Foundation decided in 2009 that the time had come to rebuild the summer palace of the Guelph royal family which was destroyed during the second world war. With the resurrection of the Herrenhausen Palace – which will be used as a scientific congress centre and museum – the Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen become reunited with their architectural centrepiece.

      The Herrenhausen Palace Museum as well as the new foyer for visitors of the museum and the gardens with pay desk, wardrobe and shop are open as of now. Visitors can enter the Great Garden through the Palace and the princely flower garden. The Palace is also the entrance to the Arne-Jacobsen foyer and the Herrenhausen Gallery while the entrance to the convention centre is in the western wing of the Palace.

      The museum spreads over the eastern wing, the western wing and an connecting aisle with some 900 square meters.

      Now open: The Herrenhausen Palace Museum is a further cultural gem for the state capital Hannover.

      Opening Times

      The Great Garden and the Berggarten botanical gardens open throughout the year at 9.00 am. They close at different times depending on the season. The museum opens daily in the summer season from 11.00 am to 6.00 pm. In the winter season (1 November to 31 March) the museum is open from Thursday to Sunday from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm.
