A Century of Merz. Kurt Schwitters. Crossmedia

In 2019, the Sprengel Museum is celebrating the centenary of the inception of Kurt Schwitters’ Merz art with a new exhibition from the collection.

It comprises over 150 exhibits from his genre-transcending oeuvre, as well as works by like-minded international contemporaries such as Theo van Doesburg, Hans Arp and El Lissitzky. Merz is based on the principle of the evaluating materials and media of all kinds and establishing relationships between them. From the images, texts and sounds in the exhibition, it becomes obvious that Merz stands for the greatest possible unreservedness and artistic freedom in the choice of means of expression.
The exhibition of the works is closely linked conceptually to Schwitters’ cross-media series “Merz”, which appeared in Hannover between 1923 and 1932 and made Merz known in Europe and the USA. The exhibition introduces the new hybrid edition in digital and printed form, which has been created in cooperation with the University of Wuppertal and the Trier Center for Digital Humanities. The structural characteristics and creative potential of the Merz series have undergone interdisciplinary research and comprehensive processing (www.schwitters-digital.de).
