Berlioz' Requiem at KunstFestSpiele 2018

After the successful performance of the "Gurre-Lieder" in 2016, the KunstFestSpiele Herrenhausen will once again gather the musical forces in Hanover on 27 May 2018 in the Kuppelsaal for an unusual and large-format work.

Hector Berlioz’s sublime Requiem receives its first performance in Hanover under Ingo Metzmacher with a huge contingent of participants. A renewed cooperation between the KunstFestSpiele and the NDR Radiophilharmonie, the orchestra of the Hanover University of Music, Drama and Media, and nine Hanover choirs.

About the Requiem

Berlioz’s "Grande messe des Morts" makes its impressive impact in the tension between imposing spatial sound effects – created by four brass bands distributed around the auditorium, 16 timpani and the huge choir and orchestra – and more quiet sections. Although Berlioz sets the traditional requiem text, the religious threnody is not central to the work. This generally less dramatic piece alternates instead between the official character of a memorial for the dead of the July Revolution of 1830 and personal mourning for the fallen, which is expressed in the calm passages.

Silence and Return

In the performance at the KunstFestSpiele the contemplative character is particularly emphasised by the performance of Bernd Alois Zimmermann’s orchestral piece "Stille und Umkehr" (Silence and Return) at the end of the "Requiem", which extends and intensifies the indissoluble contradictions developed in Berlioz’s composition into an existential dimension.

Most recently, members of the choirs and orchestras in particular had taken advantage of this opportunity to be as close as possible to the participants.
