Concert

Gidon Kremer is one of the most important violinists of our time. He is particularly committed to the work of Russian and East European composers. In the course of his career, Kremer has given the first performances of many important works, some of which are dedicated to him.

For his concert in the Galerie he brings works by soviet composer Mieczyslaw Weinberg along with Frederic Chopin’s rarely heard Piano Trio together with cellist Giedre Dirvanauskaite and pianist Georgij Osokins. Gidon Kremer has contributed significantly to the overdue rediscovery of Weinberg's music in recent years.
Kremer describes him – who for a long time was only seen as an imitator of his friend and musical confidant Dmitri Shostakovich – as ‘a source of unlimited inspiration’. The 24 Preludes, originally for cello and arranged by Kremer for violin, will be accompanied by projections of images by the Lithuanian photographer Antanas Sutkus, one of Europe’s most significant humanist photographers. In 2017 he was awarded the prestigious Dr Erich Salomon Prize of the German Photographic Association.

Weinberg’s Cello Preludes and Sutkus’s powerful images were created at approximately the same time, around 1960. And although there is no direct connection between the two artists, the project shows how they shared a life experience. The music and images reflect the world of a special utopian ideology that was imposed on everyone during the Soviet period.

With his unadorned images from the geographical centre of Europe, Sutkus was politically treading on thin ice during the cold war. Similarly to Weinberg, who was able to preserve his authenticity and integrity despite totalitarian oppression under Stalin.
