A spatial performance based on the monologue of Molly Bloom from Ulyssesby James Joyce.

‘… yes and his heart was going like mad and yes I said yes I will Yes’. A sentence without punctuation, officially the longest sentence in English literature, breathtaking in its endless flow. These are the last words of Molly Bloom’s famous monologue from ‘Ulysses‘, with which James Joyce draws the reader into her ramified streams of thought.

Breathtaking too is Rebecca Saunders’ energy-charged composition YES, which responds to this monologue. Saunders’ unmistakable language blurs the boundary between vocal and instrumental music. In an almost physical way we experience in this music of breath sounds Molly Bloom’s stream of consciousness, which speaks of female sexuality, needs and perceptions.

Saunders, who was awarded the prestigious Ernst von Siemens music award this year, uses the words as musical material, she doesn’t set them to music, but rather emphasizes the wealth of sound in Joyce’s endless sentence. ‘Working with the voice, its limitations and the exploration of the numerous ways of working with the breath opens up a whole new world of acoustic and emotional possibilities’, says Rebecca Saunders about her music, which she composed 2017 for the Ensemble Musikfabrik. For Saunders, space becomes an instrument in which the singer and musicians wander through acoustic landscapes. And so the audience finds itself in the middle of a sound sculpture, which only gradually emerges in the Galerie, offering new auditive perspectives in the permanent changing constellations of the spatial polyphony of sound.
