Film Theater: Zvizdal - (Chernobyl - so far so close)

On 2 and 3 June Zvizdal portrays the life of Nadia and Pétro Opanassovitch Lubenoc. After the explosion of the Chernobyl reactor in 1986, they refused to evacuate and remained in their homestead in the contaminated zone.

Berlin - Zvizdal

The artists of the Antwerp-based group "Berlin" regularly spent time with Nadia and Pétro in their Ukrainian village from 2011 to 2016. In a complex set-up of a double screen and three miniature models of the smallholding, the group transports us into the ghostly surroundings of the 80-year-old couple. We see their everyday life with a horse and a cow, but without electricity or running water. We hear them singing and cursing, learn about superstition, vodka and the uncertainties of ageing. And around them the colourless and odourless radiation is ever-present.

Filme und Live-Bilder

In their virtuoso film and theatre performance, "Berlin" paint a many-faceted portrait of survival in poverty and solitude, but also of the love and hope of two old people. Conversation and observation, filmic documentation and live images of the models are woven into a surprising dramaturgy. The film’s calm, the atmospheric sound, the footage of the landscapes in the changing seasons and the dramatic development complete the picture we obtain of Nadia and Pétro. In their apparent insignificance, their weather-tanned faces, limping and toothless curses take on an existential universality.
