At long last, tickets for the 2018 International Fireworks Competition will go on sale tomorrow, 3 November 2017. They are available as a self-print e-ticket directly from our online shop at www.hannover.de/onlineshop or as a conventional paper ticket from Hannover Tourist Information, Ernst-August-Platz 8, and all the usual advance booking offices.
“For four of the five teams who will compete next year, this is the first time they have designed fireworks for Herrenhausen Gardens, so I am very keen to see what they have to offer. It is a particular honour for Hannover that a team is prepared to travel from the other end of the world to take part in this event,” says Hans Christian Nolte, Managing Director of Hannover Veranstaltungs GmbH (HVG).
The 2018 dates and teams at a glance
26 May: Scarpato Pirotecnica from Italy
The company was founded in Naples in the eighteenth century, and in the 1930s, Antonio Scarpato Senior and his family emigrated to Germany where his wonderful fireworks soon delighted audiences. However, he soon returned to his birthplace, where the next generation took over Scarpato Protecnica and continued to show off its pyrotechnic skills. In Rimini, where the company is now based, Antonio Scarpato is the 6th generation to successfully uphold the family tradition and the founder’s values of quality, artistry, innovation and respect.
9 June: North Star Fireworks from Norway
North Star Fireworks is the youngster in the pyrotechnic world as it was only founded in 2015. Before then, however, the four present owners had already taken part in some of the largest professional shows in Norway, such as Jean Michel Jarre concerts, Tall Ships Races, New Year’s Eve and many more. The Norwegian company has a highly emotional style and practises synchronisation to perfection. North Star Fireworks presented their first show outside Norway at the Pyronale 2017 in Berlin where they were hugely successful: the audience voted the team “Winner of the Day” and the jury also awarded them 1st place.
18 August: Pyro Events Team from Romania
Pyro Events Team was founded in 2006, making it the second-youngest team at this year’s International Fireworks Competition. Pyro Events Team regards pyrotechnics as a work of art, from the initial idea and the technical challenges right through to the artistic design. The members of this team want to set new pyrotechnic standards and communicate their passion to the audience. As winners of the Romanian Festival Simfonia Focului 2014 and the Pyronale 2016, they have delivered clear proof that they can do so.
1 September: Macedos Pirotecnia from Portugal
Macedos Pirotecnia was founded by Joaquim Macedo da Silva in 1934 and has remained in the family ever since. Countless victories and prizes at national and international competitions, from Europe to Africa and from America to Asia, testify to the quality of their work. They won an Excellence Prize at the Shanghai International Festival of Musical Fireworks in 2000. What’s more, Macedos Pirotecnia has even made it into the Guinness Book of Records: in 2009, the Portuguese experts set off 66,326 rockets within just eight minutes.
15 September: Firework Professionals from New Zealand
Firework Professionals have been designing scintillating pyrotechnic displays for almost forty years. CEO Anthony Lealand is meanwhile referred to as the “grandfather” of fireworks in New Zealand. The company is based in Christchurch and designs numerous shows for official celebrations such as anniversaries, opening events and public holidays. Audiences have had the chance to admire the work of the Firework Professionals at many competitions, including the 2006 International Music and Fireworks Festival in Shanghai, at the “Flammende Sterne” fireworks festival in Ostfildern in 2010 and at the "Festival Intercontinental Feux d'Artifices" in Decazeville in the year 2004.
Tips for fireworks fans

Before the night skies above Herrenhausen Gardens provide a striking backdrop for these first-class international pyro teams, audiences can enjoy an entertaining supporting programme. Live music in the outdoor theatre and on the rehearsal stage, walking acts and cabaret, drama performances and lots of activities for kids help to while away the time until the display begins. In 2017, all the dates were sold out, some far in advance, with a total of around 55,000 spectators watching the International Fireworks Competition in the Great Garden.
For everyone who would like to combine a visit to the International Fireworks Competition with an overnight stay in Hannover, HMTG has put together a special themed package entitled “Hannover explosiv”: www.hannover.de/explosiv.
