Anna Mendelssohn: Cry Me A River

What do my tears have in common with those of the glaciers? asks Anna Mendelssohn in her breath-taking monologue about inner and outer climate catastrophes. From an array of voices, opinions and discussions she constructs an associative soliloquy, a one-woman climate conference.

Statements by politicians, scientists, surgeons, activists, poets and deep ecologists are woven into her personal observations. Anna Mendelssohn uses minimal theatrical means to reproduce her personal emotions with artificial aids – the fear, the anger, the despair, the hope and the sadness. And at some point she begins to cry.

Anna Mendelssohn doesn’t just deal with climate change; she also looks at the rhetoric it calls up. She exposes language. The details of the various ways of speaking become audible in her montage, and contexts of justification can be identified. We also learn how every single small decision is linked to millions of others.

"Cry Me A River" moves on thin ice between inner and outer worlds, between the personal and the political.
