Lecture on Nothing

"Lecture on Nothing" by John Cage is a music of words that entirely obeys compositional principles and thematises the lecture itself and its progress. The pulse and pauses of the voice, the tempi and sound of the language are in the foreground, giving rise to a charged, non-hierarchical space between text and silence, a spoken music of sound and stillness. Robert Wilson’s extraordinary work is a clear reference to his early New York years, when he was strongly influenced by Cage and Cunningham.

With his aesthetic of slowness and his emphasis on the autonomy of the theatrical elements in highly visual tableaux, Robert Wilson is one of the most important representatives of the theatrical avant-garde. Together with the composer Arno Kraehahn and the Polish video artist Tomek Jeziorski, he has developed an approach to John Cage’s pioneering text that is both visually and acoustically inspiring. Opening up space for the imagination of the viewers, Robert Wilson is a highly sympathetic interpreter of Cage’s lecture.
