Performance: Rima Kamel

In this performance, staged by Rabih Mroué at the Orangerie on 22 May, the singer’s fascinating history is impressively and emotionally linked with the history of her war-torn homeland.

Rima Kamel

As a young girl, Rima Kamel was a famous child star in the Arab world.

Aged 43 today, Rima Khcheich (her real name) enters the simple stage and begins a dialogue with her alter ego Rima Kamel. She recounts her farewell as a child star and her emancipation as a women between modernity and tradition – patronised by men as a girl, and politically co-opted as the ‘voice of the nation’.

With footage of her first television appearances, costumes worn on stage and other personal souvenirs, Khcheich/Kamel tours her past together with the audience, evoking a portrait of the child she once was. She hums and sings to recordings of her concerts or tells us personal details about individual singers in her orchestra. She tells of her connection to the Southern Lebanon, of her refugee status in her own country and of recordings interrupted by exploding bombs. All these stories give a riveting insight into an unusual life.

And when Rima Khcheich then sings, accompanying herself on the oud, an Arabian lute, the performance takes on a moving emotional depth. We experience a mature artistic personality who has emerged from political disenfranchisement with her free interpretations of traditional Arabic songs.
