Burrows Fargion Glendinning – Hysterical Furniture – 52 Portraits

© Hugo Glendinning

Performance / Tanz /Musik: Hysterical Furniture

This four-hour event on 20 May at the Galerie Herrenhausen, with performance, dance, music, video and communal eating, offers a résumé of works from the choreographer Jonathan Burrows and the composer Matteo Fargion with invited guests.

In addition to duets by Burrows and Fargion the programme includes their highly praised project "52 Portraits", a filmic work consisting of individual portraits of dancers performing short gestural choreographies to sung autobiographies, always in the same set. The "52 Portraits" were filmed by the British video artist Hugo Glendinning, whose works and live videos recurrently appear during the evening. The theatre-maker and artist Tim Etchells presents his virtuoso spoken improvisations, and the pianist Francesca Fargion interprets the wildly punkish music of the painter and composer Chris Newman and the tender piano music by that master of the small form, Howard Skempton. Along with the solo Modern Dance, performed by Claire Godsmark, a meal served up by freitagsküche chefs and shared by artists and audience is also a part of this festival of arts.

Situated somewhere between dance, music, live art and comedy, the work of Burrows and Fargion radiates delight even as it makes the audience think. Their pieces mix the formality of classical music composition with an open and often anarchic approach to performance and audiences, bringing them a worldwide following. The title they've chosen for this event, Hysterical Furniture, reflects the speed and measured chaos of their performances, and the clash between their necessary clutter of chairs, tables, microphones, pianos, speakers and lamp stands and the Baroque magnificence of the room.
