Grand Hotel Establishment
One of the slogans of the German left in the 1960s and 70s declared that sleeping with the same girl twice made you a part of the establishment. As if the revolutionaries of those days already foresaw this was the road many of them were to take. The composer, singer and performer Julia Mihály belongs to a younger generation, that can observe the student rebellion with its own distance.
In her multimedia solo performance Grand Hotel Establishment she takes a critical look at the legacy and present-day relevance of the protest generation with a fresh eye and doesn’t forget to criticise the ‘all-inclusive mentality’ of her own contemporaries.
Julia Mihály, who studied classical singing and electronic composition at the Hannover University of Music, Drama and Media, makes use of all the staging techniques available to the so-called ‘Digital Natives’ of contemporary music: computer animation, live electronics, movement detectors, gaming devices, sound manipulation – and those old classics, tape and video. Her artistic language recalls trashy Japanese music clips or live visual-art performances, and includes a gigantic plastic flamingo, pipe dreams and shredders. As a compelling performer Mihály understands and uses the means of art as a mouthpiece for social issues, and her wide spectrum of narrative possibilities breaks the boundaries of the new-music scene.
