Premiere: The Jewess

The opera by Jacques Fromental Halévy, premiered in 1835, still hits the nerve of its time today. On 14 September, "Die Jüdin" premieres and brings a social conflict to the stage of the Opera House in Hannover.

How much openness can a society tolerate in politically tense times? The conflict that unfolds between a cardinal and a Jewish goldsmith in the late Middle Ages becomes a social explosive that hits the heart of the tolerance concepts of our time.

The Limits of Charity

Constance 1414: While the embittered Jew Éléazar is ready to sacrifice his daughter, his opponent Cardinal Brogni quickly reaches the limits of his own charity. Neither of them gets rid of the prehistory of offenses and strokes of fate, for time and again a populist people plays itself into the foreground and demands accountability.

In his opera, first performed in Paris in 1835, Halévy shows the friction between people who can no longer accept the other in his foreignness. Each character calls on God - and each one means a different one. "La Juive" cleverly bundles this contradiction in music. Democracy tests its own tolerance on stage, theatre proves its ability to be a place of political discourse.

The Staging

Constantin Trinks conducts the opulent choir scenes and virtuoso arias of the piece at the desk of the State Orchestra. The conductor is a regular guest at the world's major opera houses, most recently at the Seattle Opera, the Bavarian State Opera and the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma. The powerful tenor Zoran Todorovich can be heard as Éléazar. In the hands of the team around director Lydia Steier, a complex picture arch with double bottoms is created. Steier shows a time travel full of allusions, in which the clocks go backwards and lead from today's epoch of the mass media to the depths of modern times.
