‘There hasn’t been anything so marvellous, odd, new, singular to discover in contemporary dance for a long time …’ (FAZ)
What does a gesture imply? How does the meaning of a movement unfold? In his choreographies the French choreographer and philosopher Noé Soulier dissects the individual elements of movements and reduces them to their essence. He combines the philosophical and the artistic, and examines the relationship between movement and thought. In his new production, The Waves, he assumes that we associate complex experiences with physical movements and postures, from which he elaborates a vocabulary of gestures. Like in the title-giving novel by Virginia Woolf, Noé Soulier also features six people on stage, who together create a de-sexualized world of pure movement. For the audience it is fascinating to observe how the individual movements are generated and yet impossible to decipher where they come from.
The percussionists Tom De Cock and Gerrit Nulens, from the Ensemble Ictus, interact with the virtuosic dancers and choreography in improvisations developed in collaboration with Soulier. And so we are swept into a captivating universe of sound and movement in which bodies and music cross, recoil and disperse like colliding atoms.
