Fizzing with Tradition: Hannover's Beer History

Lüttje Lage

Beer brewing in Hannover is closely linked to the name of brewer Cord Broyhan, who presented a new type of top-fermented ale in 1526. His invention led to the foundation of Gilde brewery, the oldest business still in existence in Hannover. Broyhan House – where the beer pioneer lived – is now a gastropub in the second-oldest half-timbered building in the city. The famous Lüttje Lage – Hannover’s ‘national drink’ – also dates back to that time. The easiest way to master the distinctive drinking technique is to book a “Bruchmeister” tour. Visitors to the Marksmen’s Funfair have no option but to join in this amusing alcoholic ritual.

The Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen - Sparkling Events, baroque Setting

Herrenhausen Gardens have provided an impressive backdrop for glittering events for more than 300 years. In those days, Hannover’s royal couple invited guests to attend magnificent celebrations and even today, the Royal Gardens still provide an illustrious venue for captivating illuminations, fireworks, drama and concerts. “Schorsenbummel” means Sunday shopping in Georgstraße in the city centre, accompanied by an entertaining programme of music and cabaret.
