Hermann Wilhelm Bödeker was born on May 15, 1799 in Osnabrück. He studied theology in Göttingen and in 1824 became an assistant preacher at the Marktkirche. He worked there for more than half a century and became one of the most popular pastors in Hanover.

Bödeker, known for his popular sermons, founded several foundations in the social field in Hanover. In addition, he was committed to the protection of animals and called for the establishment of an animal protection association. In the same year in which his brochure „About Cruelty to Animals“ was published (1844), the Hanoverian Animal Welfare Association was founded. Hermann Wilhelm Bödeker died on January 5, 1875.

During his lifetime, one of the most important streets in Hanover's Oststadt was named after him.
