Rhapsody in Yellow: A Ping Pong Piano Battle

Audiovisual fireworks await the audience at the Schauspielhaus on 17 May.

Rhapsody in Yellow

A wild piano duel begins on stage between two pianists who fire each other up at breakneck speed with passages from Gershwin's Rhapsody in Blue and Chengzong's Yellow River Piano Concerto. Above the pianists' heads, visual artist and director Ming Wong remixes historical film footage of Richard Nixon's famous state visit to China's communist leader Mao Zedong, archive material from international piano competitions, historical concert recordings and fast-paced table tennis matches.

At a time of growing tensions between the USA and China, we experience what in the 1970s was known as the "ping-pong" diplomacy of the two rising world powers, the USA and China.

From modern classics, pop culture, sport and television to tanks and trade wars, Rhapsody in Yellow: A Ping Pong Piano Battle traces the volatile political balance between the United States and China, in a duet of discord and harmony, chaos and happiness, humour and pathos.
