"Willkommen, Bienvenue, Welcome!" With these three words, the legendary Broadway musical began its triumphal march around the world almost 60 years ago. The film version by Bob Fosse, which won eight Oscars, made Liza Minelli a superstar. In the acclaimed production by Hamburg's St. Pauli Theatre (director: Ulrich Waller/Dania Hohmann), Tim Fischer at the head of a unique ensemble, including Anneke Schwabe as Sally Bowles, welcomes his guests to the dazzlingly wicked Kit Kat Club and leads them into a pleasure-seeking underworld.

Love, intoxicating nightlife and shattered hopes

Based on two stories, this world-famous musical tells of love and its failure in politically difficult times. US writer Cliff Bradshaw is drawn into the shimmering but increasingly darkening Berlin of the late 1920s. At the Kit Kat Club, he falls in love with the star of the evening, the young English singer Sally Bowles. She dreams of a great career and has been used to rearranging her love life on a weekly basis. But the budding feelings of these two strangers in Berlin are barely given a chance to breathe, and not just because of constant existential problems. Life concepts that are difficult to reconcile and a completely different assessment of the situation in Germany ultimately lead to their separation.

And there are tender bonds of love between boarding house landlady Fräulein Schneider and greengrocer Mr Schultz. But he is Jewish. And after a very serious attack on his shop by Nazi henchmen, it becomes clear that even this love cannot have a future in those days.
