The Sprengel Museum Hannover is right up there with the most important museums of modern art. Works by prominent expressionists such as Picasso, Chagall and Kandinsky are a must for fans of 20th century art. The collection includes works of German expressionism and French cubism, also taking in abstract art from the post-World War Two period.
Movements such as minimal art, Art Informel, Nouveau Realisme, concept art and post-minimal art are represented as well. A special highlight: Kurt Schwitters, one of the state capital’s most famous sons, here presents a reproduction of his legendary ‘Merzbau’ work – a bizarre, imaginatively decorated spatial sculpture that will make an indelible impression on visitors. An impressive new three-storey building will be added to the museum by the end of 2014.
