Emil Berliner was born on May 20, 1851 in Hanover. He went to America and invented the record and the gramophone there. He returned to Hanover and participated in the Deutsche Grammophon-Gesellschaft founded by his brother Joseph. It was from here that the record began its triumphal march through Europe.
Incidentally, with a diameter of twelve centimeters, Emil Berliner's first record was the same size as the modern compact disc (CD).
