Aviation pioneer

Karl Jatho was born on February 3, 1873 in Hanover. He became an inspector in the technical audit office of the city administration. He was one of the first amateur penny-farthing stunt riders and dabbled in flying.

In 1896 he built his first glider. On August 18, 1903, four months before the Wright brothers, he managed the first powered flight on the Vahrenwalder Heide. However, his flying school and his Hanoverian aircraft works did not have any lasting success. Karl Jatho died in Hanover on December 8, 1933.
