Fantasie Minor

Two hip-hop dancers and the Romantic music of Franz Schubert? Four hands at the piano and two bodies schooled in battles and freestyle? Sounds like a daring combination.

Fantasie Minor

The Portuguese choreographer Marco da Silva Ferreira has created a remarkable duo that precisely follows the yearningly melancholy music of Schubert’s Fantasia in F Minor. But the two dancers from the Centre Chorégraphique National in Caen wear boots instead of points, although in boots they dance en pointe. So the duo becomes a duel with bad-boy attitude, with hunched backs and splayed legs. On the other hand the dancers take up the rhythm of the music, sometimes as a friendly competitive pas de deux, sometimes with twitching shoulders or legs, and then again with lifts, glissés, piqués and distorted pointes …

This Fantasie minor has an tender explosive energy that seizes the bodies of the dancers. They move between burlesque and classic, between ballet and urban dance; they have a lightness. The hip-hop codes are suspended; the apparently distant worlds find each other in a new space of interchange, of gracefulness and sensitive mutual contact. The KunstFestSpiel present this surprising, virtuoso, half-hour piece by Marco da Silva Ferreira in the magnificent Herrenhausen Gardens.
