Kronos Quartet

To the KunstFestSpiele they bring music by famous composers from minimal music, free jazz, pop and new music.

They wouldn’t be the Kronos Quartet if they hadn’t made good provision for future generations well before their anniversary! Along with fifty commissions, they also initiated a performance, education and legacy project titled Fifty for the Future. An investment in the future, as the works help young amateur and professional string quartets to develop and refine the techniques necessary to perform the repertoire of the twenty-first century.

Curious about the unknown, the four musicians have tirelessly commissioned pieces since their beginnings. From world stars, newcomers or ‘no-names’ from all genres and all parts of the world.

The ensemble, founded by the violinist David Harrington, became the bubbling source of new creations with its hugely variable virtuosity. Kronos has been an inspiration for generations of musicians around the globe who draw no distinction between classical music, pop, electro, experimental, punk, jazz, folk music or other musical cultures.
