The Making of Berlin

In the final hours of the Second World War the Reichsorchester (today the Berlin Philharmonic) decides to record Siegfried’s Funeral March from Wagner’s 'Twilight of the Gods'.

Making of Berlin

Rehearsals in one place with the entire orchestra soon prove to be too dangerous because of the continual bombing. The conductor distributes the orchestra around seven bunkers to rehearse. The music would be merged and broadcast live on the radio.

Friedrich Mohr, the orchestra librarian, was also involved in this venture. It is still his dream to repeat the concert. The Flemish theatre group BERLIN is enthusiastic about the idea, through which they intend to make a filmed portrait of the city of Berlin. For this re-enactment the artists obtain the participation of the Symfonisch Orkest van Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, the radio station Klara and the actor Martin Wuttke. But suddenly inconsistencies appear in Mohr’s account. Is he really who he says he is? The theatre group’s work takes an unexpected turn.

"Overwhelming from beginning to end" was how the Belgian newspaper De Standaard described this multi-media performance with live music. BERLIN have taken their filmic documentary theatre to a new level of mastery in this fascinating story of truth and lies.
