In the picturesque Old Town the Christmas Market takes place from 21 November to 22 December.
Around the Marktkirche and up to the Platz der Weltausstellung, on the Ballhofplatz and around the Historical Museum, 111 Christmas-decorated stalls offer wooden toys from the Erzgebirge and South Tyrol, arts and crafts articles, ceramics and household goods, among other things. The guests' physical well-being is also catered for with Christmas food and drinks.
Finnish village and medieval market
The Ballhofplatz will once again be transformed into a Finnish Christmas village with a genuine Lappish tent. Finnish specialities and handicrafts will be on offer.
Around the Historical Museum, visitors can experience medieval town life at 45 stalls, and craft demonstrations and activities of various kinds encourage visitors to take part in the "Handwerkergasse" (craftsmen's alley). There, visitors can, for example, felt or forge.
Wishing Well Forest
After a two-year break due to Corona, the "Wishing Well Forest", an area of about 400 square metres with 50 fir trees on the Wood Market, is back. In the middle of the trees is the Oskar Winter Fountain, on whose wrought-iron grille you can find the "Wishing Ring". According to legend, wishes come true when this ring is turned. The forester's house and two forest huts in the wishing well forest are sure to fulfil culinary wishes.
Programme for children
Children will enjoy the large carousel at the Marktkirche and the small Ferris wheel in Grupenstraße as well as the Christmas bakery at the Marktbrunnen and the puppet theatre at the Old Town Hall. The storyteller tells tales in a circus wagon, and every day at 5.30 pm Father Christmas comes and hands out fruit to the young guests. A night watchman in historical costume rings in the end of the event every evening.
This year the lights will only be on from 4pm to 10pm instead of 11am to 11pm.
